Latest AHIP State Data Book provides a state-by-state snapshot of how health insurance providers support affordability and access, create jobs for millions of Americans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Health insurance providers deliver high-quality, affordable coverage to hundreds of millions of Americans and support millions of good-paying jobs. Those are two of the key takeaways from Health Coverage: State-to-State 2021, a biennial, comprehensive report by America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). The latest report, released today, takes a detailed look at health insurance coverage and industry employment for all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

“Health insurance providers are committed to ensuring that all Americans have affordable, high-quality coverage and equitable care,” said Matt Eyles, president and CEO of AHIP. “And as job creators, we are also committed to empowering the communities we serve, particularly those that have been historically underserved or underrepresented.”

The report provides detailed information for each state on a range of categories, including:

  • Number of lives covered by market (Employer, Individual, Medicaid, Medicare Advantage)
  • Total number of jobs supported directly and indirectly
  • Average wages and state taxes contributed
  • Individual marketplace coverage details

“Health insurance providers support nearly two million jobs for Americans, powering local economies,” Eyles continued. “We are proud to be an essential part of the economic engine that drives America and the communities we serve.”

According to the latest numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau, 92% of Americans—or nearly 300 million people—have health insurance coverage. Recently, AHIP released a report on the value of employer-provided health coverage, finding that more than half of Americans, or 183 million, get health insurance coverage through their employer.
