Andrea Willis, MD, MPH, FAAP
Senior Vice President & Chief Medical Officer, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee
Dr. Andrea D. Willis is senior vice president and chief medical officer for BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, which has more than 6,000 employees and serves more than 3.4 million members throughout the state and across the country. In this role, Willis guides BlueCross clinical processes that are central to improving the health and well-being of the company’s members.
She oversees Total Health Management and pharmacy management and is responsible for achieving and maintaining clinical quality excellence, optimizing member care and medical management functions, and overseeing clinical risk management and collaboration with the provider community. Willis serves as the clinical face of the organization with customers, providers, regulators and other stakeholders, as well as our employees and Board of Directors.
Willis previously served as medical director of the BlueCross CHOICES Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) program, where she advised on plans of care for daily living services and home health services, and she chaired CHOICES regional advisory panel meetings. She’s also served as medical director for BlueCare Tennessee and Cover Tennessee.
Before joining BlueCross, Willis served as director of the CoverKids program and was responsible for developing Tennessee’s federally approved State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). She also previously served as deputy commissioner for the Tennessee Department of Health. She played a key role in creating and implementing statewide initiatives including “Better Health: It’s About Time” and “Respect Your Health.”
Willis is a fellow with the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Tennessee Medical Association. She’s served on the board of directors for the Tennessee Institute of Public Health and the Institutional Review Board for Tennessee Department of Health.
Willis earned a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health and a Doctor of Medicine from Georgetown University School of Medicine. She received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, earning the Alpha Kappa Alpha Award for Academic Achievement. In 2019, she was selected by the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association to receive its Distinguished Alumna Award.
