Russell Leftwich, MD
Senior Clinical Advisor, Interoperability, InterSystems
Russell Leftwich, MD, FAMIA, serves as a senior clinical advisor for interoperability at InterSystems, a global data technology company. His role is to advise InterSystems around healthcare data standards in their products and to support healthcare product strategy globally. Dr. Leftwich is a frequent presenter in the U.S. and internationally around the FHIR data standard. He is on the board of the HL7 FHIR Foundation and has previously served as director and treasurer of the HL7 International board. He co-chairs HL7 Learning Health Systems WG and Clinical Interoperability Council and has been involved in the creation of the FHIR standard since its beginning. He is active in the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and is a Fellow of AMIA.
Dr. Leftwich practiced medicine in Nashville for 22 years, served as Chief Medical Informatics Officer for the State of Tennessee, and is an adjunct Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Dr. Leftwich is board certified in Internal Medicine, Immunology, and Clinical Informatics. He received the HIMSS Physician IT Leadership Award for outstanding contributions to the ONC Standards and Interoperability Framework.
