Our statement provides information on the efforts health insurance providers are undertaking to cover and improve maternal and infant care. Key points highlighted by our statement include:

  • Health insurance providers cover the full continuum of health care services for women, including expectant mothers. These services encompass prevention (e.g., contraception, HPV Vaccine) and screening (e.g., mammography, cervical and ovarian cancer screening), maternity and postpartum health, behavioral health, and more.
  • Health insurance providers are also working to address the significant impact the opioid crisis has had on the health of mothers and their babies. Many health insurance providers are partnering with hospitals, physicians, and other organizations to create specialized programs including medication assisted treatment (MAT) and counseling for pregnant women struggling with opioid addiction or other substance use disorder (SUD).
  • Health insurance providers are committed to ensuring that our members receive high-quality care during pregnancy, childbirth and after delivery, including addressing the social determinants of health and disparities in care.
