Majority of Americans Value Privacy and Affordability over Transparency

Resource Details

Every American should be able to get personalized health care cost and quality information before they seek care. Health insurance providers are committed to delivering actionable, personalized information to help patients and consumers make informed decisions.

Patients and consumers deserve better access to personalized, actionable health care information to empower them to make better, more informed decisions – but it should not drive up health care costs or compromise the privacy of their personal health data. Consumers agree: 62% say that stronger protection of their personal privacy should outweigh any efforts to make it easier to access consumer health care data.

Health insurance providers already offer Americans easy-to-use tools to get the personalized information they need about their care options and potential costs. From telehealth to mobile apps, secure member portals to cost estimator tools and provider directories – Americans have many options for getting information about where to get the best and most valuable care for themselves and their families.

Here’s what else Americans said:

  • A strong majority (75%) said they wouldn’t support regulations designed to make it easier to find out the price of medical procedures if they led to higher premiums.
  • An overwhelming majority of consumers (90%) believe that private technology companies should be held to the same privacy standards as health insurance providers.

AHIP members are committed to providing clear, concise, and customized health care information. Transparency should aid and support patient decision-making, should not undermine competitive negotiations that lower patients’ health care costs, and should put downward pressure on premiums for consumers and employers.

“Health insurance providers unequivocally want to empower patients and consumers with cost and quality information that is clear, simple, and personalized.” Matt Eyles, President and CEO, AHIP
